What is the Premier League Darts and who is playing in it this year?

The Premier League is a series of weekly events which sees some of the world’s best dart players go head-to-head over 17 nights of action. Starting in February and running to May every Thursday night sees the players compete in arenas across the UK and Europe.

This non-ranking event sees the top 4 in the world rankings joined by 4 players invited to compete by the PDC as “Wild card picks”. Wild card picks are selected by the PDC and Sky Sports and are often a poiunt of contention among die hard darts fans. At the end of the day however, the picks are chosen based on putting “Bums on seats” and more often than not the PDC and Sky get it right in terms of viewing figures generated. Premier League Darts format

Each Premier League night plays out as a mini tournament with the eight players competing in four quarter-finals and playing down to a nightly winner. Each of the players meet once in the quarter finals of the first seven weeks and then again from weeks nine to 15.

Every match is best-of-11 legs and the results form a season ranking. Every week winner gets five points, the runner-up three points and the two losing semi-finalists two points. The top four players on the Premier League ranking table at the end of Night 16 in Sheffield advance to the Play-Offs and Finals Night in London on May 28.

How do the Play-Offs work on Finals Night?

The player topping the table after week 16 of the season will play the fourth-placed player and the second-placed player takes on the man in third place. Unlike the nightly events, the two semi-finals are played over a best-of-19 legs.

The winner of those semi-finals go head-to-head in the final later that evening, which is played over a best-of-21 legs. Premier League Darts prize money
